A course for students who are learning Standard Australian English (SAE) as an additional language. Students build skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing for school and life beyond school.
This course is a good choice for students who:
- speak a language (or dialect) other than English at home or in their community
- want to build confidence using English for class discussions, presentations and writing
- want to strengthen academic English skills for other subjects
About this course
EAL focuses on language learning and explicitly teaches the structures and features of Standard Australian English. Students study and create a wide range of oral, written and multimodal texts, and learn how language changes depending on audience, purpose and context.

This course can support pathways into areas such as:
- further study where strong English communication is important
- workplace and training pathways that require clear speaking and writing
- improved success across other college subjects
Units in this course
Students complete 2 units for a Minor or 4 units for a Major.
Language and Culture
This unit explores how language and culture connect, and builds confidence creating texts for different purposes.
Students will:
- learn how text structures and language features change depending on audience and purpose
- create oral, written and multimodal texts in real and imagined contexts
Perspectives in Texts
This unit explores viewpoints and attitudes in texts and develops planning and editing skills for extended responses.
Students will:
- identify and compare attitudes, values and culturally based assumptions in texts
- plan, draft and edit extended oral, written and multimodal texts
Communication
This unit explores how language choices create different effects, such as describing, informing and persuading.
Students will:
- analyse how language choices shape meaning and influence audiences
- create texts for different purposes and audiences using SAE appropriately
Issues and Attitudes
This unit focuses on using language to respond to real issues and communicate informed views clearly.
Students will:
- investigate issues using research and evaluate how texts achieve specific purposes
- create and refine extended oral, written and multimodal texts and presentations
