ACT public schools have a policy on the use of mobile phones and other personal communication devices at school.
During class time (and any teacher instruction)
During class time and any teaching event or instruction:
- Silence your phone and put it away.
- Put away means your device is out of sight in a safe place. It must not be:
- on your body (for example, in your pocket)
- on your desk
- in your work area.
- You must not use anything connected to your device during these times (for example):
- wired connections
- Bluetooth
- hotspot or tethering
- This includes items like headphones, speakers and Chromebooks.
Using devices for learning
You may use your device in class only if your teacher clearly allows it for learning.
Break times
You may use your device at other times while at school, such as lunch and breaks.
Filming and photos
You must not film, photograph, or share images or footage of students, staff, or visitors unless the person being recorded has given their consent.
Exemptions
You can request an exemption if you need your device or assistive technology:
- to manage or monitor a medical condition
- to meet caring or family responsibilities
- to support adjustments for disability
- as part of an agreed individual learning plan.
How to request an exemption
- Complete the Personal Use of Communication Devices Exemption Request Form (.docx 34KB).
- Email the form to gungahlincollege@ed.act.edu.au or hand it in to the Front Office.

Passcodes required for personal devices
If you access your school Google account on a personal phone or tablet, you must have a screen lock or passcode turned on.
This does not give the Directorate access to or control over your personal device. It provides a basic level of protection.

Use these guides:
Please make sure your device meets these requirements.
