At a glance
A practical maths course that helps students build confidence using numbers in everyday life, work and other subjects. Students learn how to read and use information in tables, graphs and real situations, and how to make good decisions using maths.
Enrolment requirement: To enrol in Bridging Numeracy, students need evidence that they have not yet achieved the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 3. This can include (for example) a recommendation from their high school.
This course is a good choice for students who:
- want extra support to build practical numeracy skills for everyday life
- want to feel more confident with graphs, tables and money maths
- want to strengthen numeracy skills that help in other courses
About this course
Bridging Numeracy is designed to support students to reach the benchmark of ACSF Level 3. The course focuses on real-life numeracy, workplace problem solving, personal finance, and making sense of numbers in the media and everyday decisions. Assessment usually includes practical tasks and projects where students show how they solved a problem and explain their thinking.
Pathways
This course can support pathways into areas such as:
- improved success in other college courses that use numeracy
- workplace readiness (pay, conditions, budgets, everyday calculations)
- further training where practical numeracy is important
Units in this course
Students complete 2 units for a Minor or 4 units for a Major.
Practical Numeracy
This unit is about using maths in personal, workplace and social situations.
Students will:
- use numeracy for everyday tasks (for example shopping, bills, pay and conditions)
- practise workplace problem solving using numbers, measurement and basic calculations
Techno-mathematical Skills
This unit is about using technology (especially spreadsheets) to work with data and make decisions.
Students will:
- use spreadsheets to organise information and communicate results clearly
- build skills in personal financial numeracy (budgets, comparisons, value for money)
Making Informed Numeracy Decisions
This unit is about using maths to make good decisions in personal and community life.
Students will:
- interpret real information (for example media claims, contracts, travel costs, odds)
- compare options and explain choices using evidence and simple calculations
Interdisciplinary Mathematics
This unit is about using numeracy in other areas (like health, sport, the built environment or personal interests).
Students will:
- apply numeracy to a real context linked to another subject or interest area
- collect, interpret and present data to support a conclusion or decision
