Certificate III Health Services Assistance HLT33115

Course information

The Certificate III in Health Services Assistance is a nationally accredited course that can provide students with job preparation for a range of Health Services roles such as Nurse Care Assistant, Hospital Orderly and more.

In 2026 the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance course will be offered by an external training organisation (JSC Positive Outcomes RTO), who will provide a skilled trainer to deliver the program to students. The class will be on the Gungahlin College Timetable and students will be supervised and supported by a Gungahlin College teacher. The program is designed to be delivered to students over 2 years (i.e., as a Major) but in 2026 JSC will also be offering a fast-track option for students aiming to complete it within one year. Participation in the course will also provide students with points that will count towards their Year 12 Senior Secondary certificate.

NB: As this is an educational program offered by an external provider, and not the ACT Department of Education, it will require students to pay for the learning they receive towards gaining this qualification. Students will be able to enrol in one unit at a time for the cost of $125 per unit (to be paid at the onset of each unit of study).  There are 15 units in the certificate, therefore the combined cost to students undertaking the full qualification would be $1875.

Post School Pathways

The qualification reflects the role of a variety of workers who use a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge to provide assistance to professional Health Services staff for the care of clients. Students who are interested in studying Health Science and/or Human Biology, who enjoy hands-on, real-life learning in the classroom, and who are interested in working in the Health Services industry post-Year 12, will benefit from choosing this course.

Workload expectation

Students enrolling in this course would be expected to fully participate in simulations and role plays in class. Research of topics related to health, legislation and the human body will be required. Students would typically be expected to complete 2-3 hours of set, directed learning each week in order to progress through the qualification.  The learning delivered will include face-to-face and online components.  Students will need to bring to class a notebook/exercise book, pens and a laptop and charger.

The course also includes a compulsory 80 hours of work placement in a health services facility undertaking tasks consistent with the Certificate.  These placements would be secured by the College through the Careers and VET staff teams.
