Course Information
This Bridging Course is designed for EAL students who are at the Emerging to Developing phase in their English learning progression. The course focuses on developing communication skills in a range of contexts. Prior approval from the EAL coordinator is required. This unit can be taken as an additional English (sixth) class to support English learning at college.
Workload expectation
An EAL course requires commitment and a positive work ethic to complete the required tasks in class and an effective study regime to consolidate learning. Take-home assignments and a program of study before tests and examinations are also required to be completed.
Eligibility
Students who are developing proficiency in Standard Australian English (SAE) are eligible such as
- Students with an English as Additional language or dialect background
- Students who received EAL support in High School
- Migrants on temporary and permanent visas
- International Private fee-paying Students (IPS)
- Exchange students

Unit descriptions
Bridging 1: Communication Foundation
This unit focuses on developing communication skills in a range of contexts. The unit will enable students to apply their knowledge and understanding as they create simple texts that express their needs, opinions and ideas.
Bridging 2: Consolidate Communication
This unit focuses on consolidating communication skills in a range of contexts. This unit will enable students to develop strategies for collecting, organising and presenting ideas and information.
Bridging 3: Responding to Texts
This unit focuses on responding to and creating extended texts in familiar contexts. The unit will enable students to create extended oral, written and multimodal texts with a degree of accuracy in structure, language and register. Strategies for collecting, organising and presenting ideas and information continue to be developed.
Bridging 4: Connecting to Texts
This unit focuses on responding to and creating connected extended texts in personal, social, community and workplace contexts. Cultural assumptions are explored and explained through the study of a variety of texts, including popular and literary texts. Strategies for collecting, organising and presenting ideas and information are consolidated.
