A practical course where students learn how athletes train, recover and improve performance. Students use sport science ideas and real examples from sport and training.
Entry into the Athlete Development unit is by application. To apply, please complete the Athlete Development Program Application Form.
This course is a good choice for students who:
- play sport and want to understand training and performance
- enjoy practical learning and using data (video, stats, testing)
- are interested in coaching, fitness, sport science or sport pathways
About this course
Athlete Development explores athlete preparation, performance and wellbeing in different sport settings. Students investigate training, tactics and recovery, and use evidence to plan and improve performance. Assessment usually includes practical analysis tasks and short research tasks.
This course has three separate classes for students to choose from:
- Athlete Development (A) - Soccer/Futsal
- Athlete Development (A) - Rugby Football Codes
- Athlete Development (A) - AFL/Individual athletes
Pathways
This course can support pathways into areas such as:
- fitness, sport and recreation
- coaching and athlete support roles
- sport science and human movement study
- sport management and administration
Units in this course
Students complete 2 units for a Minor or 4 units for a Major.
Personal Development
This unit is about goal setting and building habits for a balanced sporting life.
Students will:
- explore motivation, time management and goal setting
- learn about training load, rest and sustainable progress
Athletes in Society
This unit is about sport careers and the role of athletes in society.
Students will:
- explore athlete roles, responsibilities and ethical issues
- investigate sport careers and how sport organisations work
Athlete Profile and Preparation
This unit is about athlete testing, planning and preparation.
Students will:
- explore athlete testing and profiling
- use data to design preparation programs
Performance Analysis
This unit is about analysing performance to improve tactics and results.
Students will:
- use video or statistics to analyse performance
- create improvement plans, including injury prevention
