At a glance
A practical course where students learn to design and make timber products using workshop tools, materials and safe work practices. Students learn how timber behaves as a material, and how to plan and build quality projects.
This course is a good choice for students who:
- enjoy hands-on making and learning practical workshop skills
- like working carefully with tools, measurements and project plans
- want to build skills for further training or employment in trade and making pathways
About this course
Timber Products develops skills needed to create timber products, including workshop procedures, materials, sustainability, ethics, equipment and work health and safety (WHS). Students use planning, specifications, tools and machinery to make projects and improve their work over time. Assessment usually includes practical making tasks and project work, supported by planning and reflection.
Pathways
This course can support pathways into areas such as:
- trade and industry pathways that involve timber and making
- further training and study in design, construction or workshop-based areas
- employment pathways that value safe work habits, teamwork and project skills
Units in this course
Students complete 2 units for a Minor or 4 units for a Major.
Creating with Timber
This unit builds foundation workshop skills for working safely with timber and making projects from a given design.
Students will:
- learn safe workshop practices and correct use of selected tools and materials
- make projects using joints and construction techniques from plans or instructions
Timber Manufacturing Contexts
This unit develops workshop skills by exploring timber products in a selected manufacturing context.
Students will:
- analyse timber products in a selected context and choose suitable techniques and joints
- use technical information, plans and measurements to produce products to a standard
Creating to a Design Process
This unit focuses on creating products using a design process, including planning and sustainable choices.
Students will:
- follow a design process to respond to a design brief and develop a product
- consider materials, costs and feedback to improve design decisions
Timber Project
This unit is about managing a full timber project from idea to completion (or modifying an existing design to meet a need).
Students will:
- plan and manage a project timeline and build a timber product to meet requirements
- document progress and evaluate processes and techniques to improve outcomes
